Tokyo existed in my imagination which was coloured by literature, movies (and
my love for Shiseido since my teenage). The real Tokyo was a culture shock to
me. As if I travelled from the Moon and landed on the Earth. I had to connect
with the people living here; this was my only possibility to find my way in
this completely new world. So I did my street-performance.
The performance involves me going up to people in the streets to request a one
minute video-portrait of them. Even if we don’t speak each other’s language, a
conversation will occur in this way. If a verbal conversation happened or not,
there was eye-contact and there was a profound consciousness of the other. A
precious ephemeral encounter did happen.
For the video, I edited fragments out of these one-minute conversations to a
slow movie. My camera was the toolbox for making it happen when, at the same
time, it captured the encounter.
