Lapis Lazuli and Indigo are the two enchanting families of blue where all later blue shades are descendants of.
Lapis Lazuli has a cristalline origin, it was made by pulverizing the precious stones from Afghanistan. The original Indigo is vegetal, as it is produced from indigo-plants through an intensive rotting process. International Klein Blue, Yves Klein’s Ultramarine blue paint, the most brilliant incarnation of the old Lapis Lazuli, consists solely of chemicals. Tarpaulin blue has neither a fabulous ancestor nor a precedent in nature or patented synthetic formula.
I became aware of the existence of a new blue, Tarpaulin blue, during my residency in Mumbai, where blue tarpaulins are used for everything. From then on, I became alerted by tarpaulins almost everywhere and everyday. Tarpaulins are the universal emergency solution and the primary shelter for people around the globe.
Tarpaulin blue occurs in infinite variations (like the hydrangea in my mother’s garden). There are as many Tarpaulin blue’s as there are situations in which people use the (blue) tarpaulins.Tarpaulin blue is changeable, it alters and fades through use and it is pigmented through the necessity in peoples lives.
Tarpaulins penetrate my work and become a bearers of meaning. I perceive the colour Tarpaulin blue as a sign of the times, as now-blue.

Lapis Lazuli en Indigo zijn de twee koninklijke blauwe families waarvan alle blauwtinten afstammen.
Lapis Lazuli heeft een kristallijne oorsprong, het werd verkregen door edelstenen uit Afghanistan te verpulveren. Indigo is origineel plantaardig, het wordt uit indigoplanten gewonnen door een intensief rottings- en gistingsproces. International Klein Blue, het briljante Ultramarijn blauw van Yves Klein, met een intenstiteit verwant aan het oude Lapis Lazuli, is een zuiver synthetische verf.
Tarpaulin blue lijkt geen fabuleuze voorouders te hebben, geen voorbeelden in de natuur, en het heeft geen gepatenteerde chemische formule.
Ik heb een nieuw blauw, Tarpaulin blue, ontdekt tijdens mijn residentie in Mumbai, waar blauwe dekzeilen voor alles gebruikt worden. Sindsdien trekken ze mijn aandacht echt overal, elke dag. (blauwe) Dekzeilen zijn de universele noodoplossing en de primaire schuilplaats voor de mensen overal op de wereld.
Tarpaulin blue verschijnt in oneindig vele tinten (zoals de hortensia’s in mijn moeders tuin). Er zijn even vele Tarpaulin blue’s als er situaties zijn waarin de mensen (blauwe) dekzeilen gebruiken.
Tarpaulin blue is veranderbaar, het past zich aan door het gebruik, wordt gepigmenteerd door de noodzakelijkheid in de mensenlevens.
De blauwe dekzeilen dringen in mijn werk binnen, en ze zijn betekenisdragers.
De kleur “Tarpaulin blue” beschouw ik als een teken van de tijd, als het nu- blauw.
