WHAT’S YOUR NAME? by Marie Julia Bollansée takes the viewer to the factories of Ahmedabad and Mumbai, where the iconic blue tarpaulins that have characterised her work since 2014 are produced.
With a keen eye and an empathetic camera, Bollansée examines both the production process and the lives of the people who make these plastic tarpaulins. She talks to factory managers, but above all to workers who are often poorly paid, without security or protection, living in the factories or in slums under tarpaulin roofs. Nomadic construction workers, who live in tarpaulin tents and move their “home” to the next construction site, are also given a voice. Her companion on this journey is Priyashi Valia, who is Indian and speaks the local languages, a researcher at CEPT University in Ahmedabad.
The film thus reveals more than just the origin of a material: it exposes the mechanisms of a global system in which cheap consumer goods are made possible by inequality and exploitation.
WHAT’S YOUR NAME? is a poignant reflection on neoliberal capitalism and the human condition within it. This film adds another layer to Bollansée’s Tarpaulin blue discourse. In addition to their symbolic meaning of vulnerability and self-reliance, the blue tarpaulins also serve as an example of how the neoliberal capitalist system works, not only in India but also here in Europe. Blue tarpaulins also flag the precarious ship of human victims sailing in the Capitalocene.

WHAT’S YOUR NAME? gaat in première in het voorjaar van 2026.
De film van Marie Julia Bollansée voert de kijker naar de fabrieken van Ahmedabad en Mumbai, waar de iconische blauwe zeilen worden geproduceerd die sinds 2014 haar werk kenmerken.
Met een scherpe blik en een empathische camera onderzoekt Bollansée zowel het productieproces als de levens van de mensen die deze plastic dekzeilen maken. Ze spreekt met fabrieksdirecteurs, maar vooral met arbeiders die vaak laagbetaald, zonder zekerheid of bescherming, in de fabrieken wonen of in sloppenwijken onder een zeildak leven. Ook nomadische bouwvakkers, die in tarpaulin tenten leven en hun ‘huis’ telkens naar de volgende werf verplaatsen, krijgen een stem.
Haar compagnon de route is Priyashi Valia, die Indisch is en de lokale talen spreekt, onderzoeker aan de CEPT University in Ahmedabad.
De film onthult zo meer dan enkel de herkomst van een materiaal: hij legt de mechanismen van een wereldwijd systeem bloot, waarin goedkope consumptiegoederen mogelijk zijn door ongelijkheid en uitbuiting.
WHAT’S YOUR NAME? is een indringende reflectie op neoliberaal kapitalisme en de menselijke conditie daarbinnen.
Deze film voegt een laag toe aan Bollansée’s Tarpaulin blue discours. De blauwe zeilen krijgen naast hun symbolische betekenis van kwetsbaarheid en zelfredzaamheid, ook een voorbeeldfunctie van hoe het neoliberale kapitalistische systeem werkt, niet enkel in India maar ook hier in Europa. Blauwe tarpaulins worden de vlag op het wankele schip met menselijke slachtoffers dat het Capitalocene binnenvaart.
