For more than ten years the KMSKA, Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerp is closed, due to restauration and expansion.
A hundred years ago this home for art was build. At the time daylight entered through the glass roof via inner patio’s. These vacuum’s made the light wander inside. Now the patio’s are filled up with brandnew cleverly constructed white cubes. Daylight still enters, but it is no longer the only light source as we have electricity now.
My students and I were invited to take a look at the new museum under construction. We had to cover our shoes with these bleu plastic galoshes that should protect the shiny white floors we were walking on.
Being there, in the still empty museum, made us feel prehistorical aliens lost in a spaceship. Maybe when James Ensor and Rik Wouters take their places on the white walls things will become familiar again. But even then walking barefoot would be a better idea. Like people in India enter their temples barefoot. And like Japanese people leave their shoes at the door of their house.

Reeds meer dan tien jaar is het KMSKA, Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen, gesloten wegens restauratie en uitbreiding. Honderd jaar geleden werd dit huis voor kunst gebouwd. Al die tijd viel het daglicht door het glazen dak naar binnen via patio’s. Deze vacuüms lieten het licht binnen vrij rondzwerven. Nu zijn de patio’s opgevuld met een gloednieuwe ingenieus geconstrueerde ‘white cube’. Het daglicht komt nog steeds binnen, maar het is niet langer de enige lichtbron, want we hebben nu elektriciteit.
Mijn studenten en ik waren uitgenodigd om een kijkje te nemen in het nieuwe museum in aanbouw. Over onze schoenen trokken we blauwe plastic hoezen zodat we de glimmend witte vloeren niet zouden besmeuren.
Daar, in het nog lege museum, voelden we ons prehistorische aliens, verdwaald in een ruimteschip. Wanneer James Ensor en Rik Wouters hun plaats op de witte muren innemen, zal misschien alles weer vertrouwd worden. Maar zelfs dan zou blootsvoets lopen een beter idee zijn. Zoals de mensen in India doen als ze in de tempel gaan. En zoals Japanse mensen hun schoenen aan de deur van hun huis laten staan.
