I recorded the 2 video-projections on Campo de’ Fiori (‘the flowerfield’) at Rome, in front of the statue of Giordano Bruno. Bruno was a visionary thinker who became an icon of the free spirit. He was a contemporary of Caravaggio. In his time (end 16th century), he understood the infinity of the universe, and the earth is not the center but one of the uncountable planets and stars in the infinite universe. He rejected the hegemony of an almighty God, but saw the divine in everything and everyone. He travelled Europe to find companions and free spaces to think and speak. Returning to Rome, he became a prisoner and a victim of the Inquisition. They burned him at the stake as a heretic on Campo de’ Fiori, February 17, 1600. I wander where the other rebel, Caravaggio, was hanging out at that moment. (He cannot have been far away. Around that time he was painting in Rome, ao. how Judith beheads Holofernes and the Matteus triptych for the Contarelli’s chapel at San Luigi dei Francesi just across Piazza Navona.)

In the evening, the streetlights clarify the face of the performer.
In the morning, the cupola of Sant’ Andrea della Valle, the huge Baroc church around the corner that was expanded just after they murdered Giordano Bruno to its current abundance, projects a muzzle on the mouth of the performer.

Ik maakte de twee video-opnamen op de Campo de’ Fiori (‘het bloemenveld’) in Rome, bij het standbeeld van Giordano Bruno. Bruno was een visionaire denker die een icoon van de vrije geest werd. Hij was een tijdgenoot van Caravaggio (eind 16de eeuw). Hij begreep de oneindigheid van het heelal, en dat de aarde niet het centrum is, maar een van de ontelbare planeten en sterren in het oneindige universum. Hij verwierp de overheersing door een almachtige god, maar hij zag het goddelijke in alles en iedereen. Hij reisde door Europa om geestesgenoten te ontmoeten en op zoek naar vrije ruimten om te denken en te spreken. Toen hij terugkwam naar Rome werd hij gevangen genomen en veroordeeld voor ketterij door de Inquisitie. Het vonnis werd voltrokken op de Campo de’ Fiori, waar hij op 17 februari 1600 op de brandstapel gezet werd. Ik vraag me af waar de andere rebel, Caravaggio, op dat moment uithing. (Hij kan niet ver weggeweest zijn, rond 1600 schilderde hij in Rome oa. hoe Judith Holofernes onthoofdt, en zijn Matteus triptiek voor de Contarelli kapel in San Luigi dei Francesi, juist aan de andere kant van Piazza Navona.)

‘s Avonds verlichten de straatlampen het gezicht van de performer.
‘s Morgens projecteert de koepel van de Sant’ Andrea della Valle, de grote kerk achter de hoek die in de jaren na de moord op Giordano Bruno verbouwd werd tot haar huidige barokke toestand, een muilkorf op de mond van de performer.
